Other new capabilities include the ability to burn CDs and DVDs using the remote control (as opposed to needing third-party add-ons before) and sending and receiving instant messages via MSN while watching TV. The application allows users to record TV shows, watch DVDs, listen to music, and manage digital photos. MCE 2005 is essentially Windows XP Pro with the Media Center application running on top of it (and with deep hooks into the OS). ![]() However, do-it-yourselfers will need to upgrade their DVD decoders and obtain the latest TV tuner and video drivers. Additionally, MCE offers some other new features, including limited support for HDTV. No more will users be forced to buy a new, pre-built system off the shelf in order to get access to MCE. The most welcome change, at least for the enthusiast crowd, is that MCE 2005 will be available in some channels as an OEM product. As next week's launch of Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 draws closer, more information on it has become public. ![]()
